End of Year Seven

December 19, 2008

First thing's first. If you're a Tom Smith fan (and how can you not love good music), Mr. Smith is having a sale that lasts until December 31st, 2008. Go. Get music. He did a song for S*P, y'know. AND I know for a fact he's working on something very special and I got to hear a little sample of it the other day. Yes, Tom fans, be jealous. I got a sneak listen.

Also, Aaron Price (who does all the nasty tech stuff around here, as well as posted S*P and Punch an' Pie to the new server, has a new blog. Aaron has been my friend since I was 15. We were in Journalism together, went to UNT together, and were roommates for a while. He's currently a PhD student at Tufts University, focusing on spatial cognition. Give it a look. Aaron's an awesome guy, and the Op of Our Sys.

So, Year Seven is done. I'm glad 2008 is almost over - this has been a shitstain of a year. But as far as S*P goes, I'm happy. Could be a little happier, but I'm happy. I know I need to work a lot harder next year on the comic, but at the start of 2008 I made myself two promises: first, more comedy, less seriousness - and I'd do this scary catgirl storyline I'd planned back in late 2004/early 2005. And I stuck to both of 'em.

I like doing the serious stuff. I think it's important. But to me, S*P has to be about comedy. I want jokes and I want laughs. I know I've lost more than a few readers over the lack of "seriousness," and while I'm sad that happened, I can always be glad they enjoyed the comic for a while and that there are people who still enjoy it as much as I do creating it.

I'm not going to phase the serious stuff out of S*P, but I decided it needs to be an occasional thing. The comic was just getting too overwhelming for me. But there are a few things coming up -well, you'll see.

Seven years. I'm a little freaked out by this. It also makes me realize I have to sit down and consider the future of the strip. I'd originally planned S*P to only go ten years. Now, I don't know. I'm faced with a choice: keep it going but have the characters age and progress, or end the strip on December 19th, 2011, and focus on something else. I guess I'll know for sure the closer I get to "the deadline." But if I'm going to end it, it means in 2009 I have to at least release Year One in Book Form.

Sorry - this is becoming more of, "Notes to Myself" than year in review.

I want to thank everyone who's supported the comic - whether it was a store purchase, donation, sharing the link, or just emailing me to tell my something. I apologize I don't reply to a lot of email. I dunno why, but I always freeze up when emailing strangers. I want to thank those of you who have been reading for years or just walked in - or, wherever they are, the people who supported in the past but needed to go elsewhere.

Also, thanks to Clarine, "PeeJee" (no, still can't say her real name - sorry), Josh, Erin, Aaron, Jhim, Claire (congrats on the wedding), Anna (to you, too), Kim, Jhim, T-Bob, Brandon, Tom Smith, R. Stevens (who has more of my ideas bounced off of him than he needs), Michael (my con manager), Aeire, my family, Kacey in Tennessee, and... well, there are too many to name. I'm a very lucky person and I know it. You all mean a lot to me.

Year Eight starts on January 5th, 2009. I will still be posting comics until then (starting tomorrow). I still don't know WHAT I'll be doing, of course. I guess whatever pleases me. If you hate filler stuff like Super Stupor, RWW, or Life With Rippy - have a great holiday and I'll see you again January 5th. Otherwise, see you all tomorrow (or Monday for the work-only readers). And thanks again. -R
